Book You Really Got Me (Rock Star Romance Book 1) Review :

In a rock fiction book, I love it when the music lives and breathes, when the rock star character transcends cliché, and I give lots of bonus points for a take-charge, professional-woman heroine. You Really Got Me checked all my boxes, and for that, I award it 4.25 stars. The book starts out with Emme working as an A&R manager’s personal assistant (that’s the guy within a record label who discovers and works with bands). She’s hyper-competent, and from the first page, I loved the detail-oriented peek at exactly what machinations go on behind the curtain of managing bands. However, her boss won’t promote her to finding her own bands, so she says promote me or quit. He says, find me The Next Big Thing and we’ll talk. She moves in with her brother in his rock band’s shared house to cut her expenses while she searches Austin, Texas for a new band to sign. While there, she becomes friends with the whole band, especially their soulful, manwhore-with-a-heart lead singer, Slater. She overhauls the band’s image, again giving us a cool look at what it takes (beyond the music) to make or break a band. The sexual tension between Emme and Slater SCREAMS off the page, but she’s been hurt before and she’s not about to be the dumb girl who loses her heart to a rocker right before he goes off on tour and cheats on her.Nothing new there, right? But like any good trope, it’s all about the execution, and Emme and Slater breathe life and humanity into the setup, reminding us that this is a familiar story because it’s TRUE. It happens all the time in the musical world. I adored the friendship between Emme and Slater, and I was dying for the consummation of their relationship almost as much as they were. Plus, once Slater falls for Emme, he falls hard, and it’s so vicariously delicious to watch such an incredible specimen of a man be totally devoted to his woman. Plus, he doesn’t just play music and write songs, he fixes stuff and helps Emme run errands and sue me, but that’s just hot. Give me a man with a tool box and a guitar and I need nothing else in life.Drawbacks? Toward the end, Emme’s reluctance started to feel a little contrived, like I’d seen too many exchanges of her distrust while Slater laid it all on the line for her. But just as I was thinking that, it wrapped up into a hilarious scene where she realized what she was screwing up. I also would have given it a few more fractions of a star if the rest of the band were filled out more on the page. There were five of them, and that’s a lot, but we didn’t get to know them and their friendship with Emme as deeply as I would have liked. However, Emme’s brother and his insecurities and backstory were very nicely filled out, so I’m excited for his book (up next in the series!) What I did love about this book? The realism of the conflict and characters, the mouthwatering sexual tension, the songwriting and performing scenes and oooh la la! The musical details of what it’s like to manage a band. Very cool. This author just won herself a place on my top 10 Rock Fic authors, and I’ll be checking out the rest of her books directly.
If I were being technical, I'd give this book 4.95 Stars, but I'm not. ;D****WARNING****SPOILERS**** Do NOT read if you do NOT want SPOILERS.I have just a couple things that bugged me.....Emmie. I mean, I loved her. But she kinda frustrated the crap out of me at times. Yet on the other hand, I totally got where she was coming from. I'd have the exact same fears and doubts myself, especially if I just got out of a bad relationship with a rock star musician who cheated up the yin yang on me. I'd be like, "Never going there again!" too. And I'd have the exact same trust issues, just because let's face it, rock stars aren't exactly known for falling in love with one woman, let alone being faithful. However, there definitely came a point when it became obvious Slater wasn't your typical rock star (well, "soon-to be" anyway) and he more than proved by both his actions and words time and again, how much Emmie meant to him- how dedicated he was to her and their relationship- how much he loved her with every fiber of his being. Oh how he loved her. ((((DREAMY SIGH)))) Oops.... Ok so back to Emmie. Lol! Anyway, it took her a bit too long to let her walls down and stop living in ridiculous denial of everything in regards to her and Slater, especially towards the end. Yet at the same time, in the end it all worked for the story and how it unfolded/flowed. Erika Kelly knew what she was doing. So ultimately this isn't a complaint or a critique of her writing the story the way she did and making Emmie be the way she was. It's just me the reader saying that she/Emmie, really frustrated the crap out of me every once in a while. :)And the other thing that bugged me.... (****Still SPOILERS****)Slater. He didn't spend Emmie's birthday with her like he said he would. Just like Emmie, I totally understood why he couldn't. (And she really did understand because she really understood the nature and demands of the music business.) Piper Lee was such a bitch and she put Slater between a rock and a hard place. Had he been a solo artist trying to make it in the big leagues, no doubt in my mind he would of passed on all the press and exposure of that press party Piper threw, and gone to be with his Emmie to celebrate her birthday. But he's the lead singer of a band and he couldn't be selfish like that. Piper said she would pull the plug on all that press if he bailed, so he had to go and do his job for his band- his "brothers." Yeah, like I said, Piper Lee is a Bitch, with a capital B. Anyway, I went off on a bit of a rant again, sorry. Back to what bugged me about that.... It wasn't that he missed her birthday so much- and this is me being incredibly petty- but I just was hoping for maybe a text or two from him sent to Emmie that evening as she celebrated with Tiana and Derek- before she got home at 3am in the morning and turned on that darn computer of hers. Slater was very sweet with making sure everything would be a really nice evening for her through Tiana and Derek. And that he insisted Tiana text him a picture of Emmie that night- well that was very sweet too. That man loves Emmie like every woman wants to be loved- and then some. There was never a doubt in my mind, but it just would've been nice to see/read that while at that party, he snuck a little text in once or twice to just send Emmie a sweet little message, letting her know that even though he was far away and at such a big, busy event with lots of press, she was constantly on his mind. I knew she was. But I also knew that Emmie with her understandable yet completely unnecessary insecurities (because Slater is just that awesome people!), would've appreciated it a whole lot that night since he couldn't be there with her. And maybe it would've helped a little tiny bit with the angst and heartache that was soon to follow. So yeah, I was kind of hoping for those texts. No biggie. Like I said, that's just me splitting hairs and being petty. :)Oh and one more thing he kind of pissed me off about. The scene where he was on the bus writing songs with Piper. Fine that they were writing songs. Nothing wrong with that. Not fine in the way that they were getting together to write said songs. Slater knew her "game", and he wasn't the least bit interested in it or her. Not even a little bit. But he also wasn't being very smart. Sometimes people can be clueless like that, especially men. However, I loved that he realized right away the error of his ways due to his cluelessness and vowed to never make that mistake again (as was only right of him to do so). I know he won't. Emmie knows he won't. (What happened at the press party I mentioned above was a completely different situation/circumstance that he was trying his best to handle the right way. He was on the job that night as lead singer of Snatch, with press all around, doing what was expected of him, and while I hate that Piper put her greasy hands on him while cameras flashed all around- he did nothing wrong. Even Emmie knew deep down that she couldn't deny that, as much as it hurt to see the pictures.) Bottom line, regardless of my gripes listed above-- Slater Vaughn is boyfriend PERFECTION. And okay okay, I'll admit it..... Emmie Valencia isn't too bad herself as girlfriend material. :)(**Though real quick-- back to Emmie that day she found them writing songs together on the bus.... Why didn't Slater get all the texts she'd sent him earlier that day to let him know she'd be arriving earlier? I never saw that mentioned or explained. Did I miss something?)So that's it for the stuff that bugged me. :D That's why I'd "technically" give YRGM a 4.95 Star rating. ;) Emotionally, I give it a 10! However, since the most I can give it on Amazon is 5 Stars, that's what it gets! Because regardless of all the stuff I listed above that bugged me in this story-- I LOVE THIS STORY. I've read several rock-n-roll romances. Some I've loved, some I've liked, some I've thought sucked. You Really Got Me, I love. And not just love-- I LOVE love. :) Plus extra bonus for me-- it is now my FAVORITE rock star romance book I've ever read. Score!Okay wait.... just realized one more complaint..... ;)Ms. Kelly- I need more of Slater and Emmie. Please oh please Erika Kelly. I don't need any more trouble for them. No thank you. Just a continued happily ever after from here on out- like a little novella or something along those lines since we didn't get a real "epilogue." I would love to "catch up" with them and see them blissfully and passionately as in love as ever- if not more. Like a wedding. Yeah, a wedding wouldn't hurt. Please? :D Or heck, anything more as long as it's as wonderful and romantic and hot as YRGM is! I know you have other stories to write. Specifically- Derek's, Ben's, Pete's, and Cooper's. And I CANNOT wait for those! I'm looking VERY FORWARD to each their own love stories as well, sosososososo much! But I'm also looking forward to seeing Slater and Emmie again in each of those guys' stories, even if only here and there. I miss them already. Terribly. You Really Got Me is the start of a FANTASTIC rock star romance series! Derek's and Violet's story is up next. Freakin' hurry your butt up, July!! And THANK YOU Erika Kelly- for Slater and Emmie!!!!Most of all Slater. ;D
